Interaction of radiation with matter

According to plank radiation law , radiation is in the form of quanta and the quanta of radiation is known asa photon

For example :- x-ray , gama ray ....

In this topic we discuss only on interaction between radiation and matter .

There are two difference between x-ray , gama ray

1. Origin of energy or radiation :- The origin point completely different of x-ray and gama ray , x-ray produce by electric transitions and gama ray produce by nuclear transitions .

2.  Order of energy :- Order of x-ray and gama ray different , the x-ray energy order is between 124ev to 124kev , and gama ray order range is 100ev to 100000ev ( 100kev ).

Further , we discuss some scattering possibilities when radiation interact with matter .

●Elastic scattering

●Photo electric effect

●Compton scattering

●Pair production

●Nuclear Scattering

We discuss following possibilities in briefly :

*When gama ray photons incident on matter and doesn't transfer energy with matter is known ad Elastic scattering or RAILEIGH SCATTERING.

*If photon absorbed by electron of atom and electron ejected by a kinetics energy from surface of material then it is known as PHOTO ELECTRIC EFFECT.

*When two photons of energy > 1.02Mev incident in opposite direction then they produce electron-poisitron pair that is known as PAIR PRODUCTION

"Intensity of scattered gama ray is proportional to squares of amplitude.

intensity ∝ (Amplitude)²

intensity = k ( Amplitude )²

I = Ka²

Possibility of occurrence Cross section of these events depends on energy of gama ray and atomic number of material as shown in figure.
